Leave the porridge for anecdotes
Do you remember the words “Your oatmeal porridge, sir!” Of course, you do. And tell me, do you still believe that oatmeal porridge is the most popular meal for breakfast? I’ll tell you — it isn’t! Well, to tell the truth, nowadays that’s really difficult to choose one meal or dish, and call it ‘the Traditional English breakfast’. The reason is that there are several types of breakfast in England, that have got the name of ‘traditional’. Anyway we can single out the two most popular types of breakfast in England.
The first one, which is becoming more and more popular in the world day by day, is called ‘Full English breakfast’. It includes the following ingredients: well fried bread or toasts with butter, jam (preserves), fried eggs, bacon or sausages, black pudding, fried or grilled tomatoes, fried mushrooms and baked beans, and is usually served with a mug of tea. What was your first thought of this menu? Oh, you are absolutely right, it seems to be very and very nourishing. And it is. Such an English breakfast is based on eating traditions of the Victorian era. Looking through the notes of the 19th century we can find almost the same breakfast menu. The only thing is that the dishes we have named seem to be much more expensive and with such names as, for example: kidneys à la maître d’hôtel. As the English explain, the main idea of such a high-calorie breakfast is ‘have breakfast and forget about food until dinner’. Nevertheless they have a lot of small snacks during the day.
The second type of breakfast is more or less the same but includes porridge (oat, corn, etc.) with honey, syrup or cream, bacon and boiled eggs. As beverages, except traditional black tea usually with milk the English also like orange juice. But porridge for breakfast is not so popular and usually the English eat it on Sundays, if ever. So, as you can see, sometimes they eat porridge, but not always. That’s why leave the oatmeal porridge for anecdotes!

Чайный этикет
В Англии приготовление чая возводится в категорию практически священного ритуала. Вот как это происходит: сначала чистая вода разогревается в специальном металлическом чайнике (kettle). Когда она уже достаточно теплая, небольшое количество воды заливают в красивый заварочный чайничек (pot), чтобы согреть его. После этого чайничек насухо вытирают и кладут в него чай по такому принципу: по одной чайной ложке на каждого гостя и “еще одна чайная ложечка для чайничка” (one for point). Как только вода закипела, ее заливают в чайничек с чаем и ждут 4-5 минут, чтобы чай заварился.
Что касается бесед, которыми сопровождается чаепитие, то они представляют собой small talk, о котором мы уже говорили.

Особое внимание в нем придается этикету за столом, ведь англичане, как известно, очень заботятся о своем социальном имидже. Итак, согласно весьма авторитетному справочнику по этикету "Debrett's", за столом нож следует держать так, чтобы его рукоятка находилась под ладонью.
