Paragraph 1
New Zealand is in the South Pacific Ocean, a long way from anywhere. Australia is the closest country and that’s two thousand kilometres away. New Zealand is fairly isolated and this makes it special. New Zealand’s history is special, its weather, its people, its flora and fauna are also special.
Paragraph 2
New Zealand is situated on three islands. Two of them are quite large — the North Island and the South Island. The third island is much smaller, its name is Stewart Island. The territory of New Zealand is about the same size as the lands of the United Kingdom. But the population of the country is only four million people while sixty-one million people live in Britain.
Paragraph 3
The main language of New Zealand is English. New Zealand was once part of the British Empire and still has the British flag as part of its own flag. The first people who made New Zealand their home were the Maori. They arrived from Polynesia in wooden boats. The Maori called New Zealand “Land of the Long White Cloud”. About the year 1700 the first Europeans came to New Zealand.
Paragraph 4
The weather in New Zealand is usually never really hot or really cold. It is hotter on the North Island where most people live. It often rains and the weather can change quickly. Sometimes you can get many various kinds of weather in one day, especially on the South Island.
Paragraph 5
Thousands of people go to New Zealand. Some of them go there on holiday. They want to see the beautiful countryside and to enjoy sports. While they are there, tourists can learn interesting facts about Maori and hear many Maori stories about New Zealand. Today the biggest business in the country is tourism. Farming is also important. New Zealand has a lot of water, clean air and good earth. The country is famous for its butter, cheese and meat.

Canada is the second largest country in the world. But it has fewer people than many other countries that are much smaller. This is because much of Canada is a very cold place with long winters. In the northern islands it is often cold even in summer. Three oceans — the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Arctic — wash Canada. A lot of Canadians enjoy watching whales as a hobby. Special boats with whale watchers go out into the ocean. If they choose the right time and the right place, they have a 99 percent chance of seeing these wonderful animals.
Canada is one of the richest countries in the world. Some of the country’s riches are its huge forests that cover nearly half of the country’s territory. Canada also has more lakes than any other country. Canada is rich in rivers too. There are a lot of polar bears in Canada. Sometimes they even come to villages and towns looking for food. Polar bears are very big. They weigh up to 600 kilos. Polar bears may be dangerous, especially if you run away from them.
There are 42 national parks in Canada. People organized them to protect the forests, animals and plants. The oldest national park appeared in 1885 in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The Niagara Falls is one of the world’s wonders. These beautiful waterfalls are situated on the border between Canada and the United States. This place is one of the greatest attractions for tourists.
Canada’s official languages are English and French. But people speak many other languages in Canada too. Some of them are Canadian Indian languages. Indians were the native population of this country.
Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is one of the country’s most beautiful cities. It has many parks, museums, art galleries and universities. But the largest city in the country is not Ottawa but Toronto. If you ever go there, you’ll see one of the tallest buildings in the world, the CN Tower. Toronto is the country’s business centre and home to the largest companies and banks.

a) Laughter, flow, womanly, Frenchman, coast, empty, border, destroy, lately, leaves, ugly, suddenly, emu, chain, duckbill, journey;
b) the border between two countries, a chain of mountains, situated on the coast, to flow into the ocean, to look perfect, to stretch as far as the eye can see, a desert island, an empty territory, a journey home, to begin suddenly, to my great surprise;
c) Lucy wants to have a room of her own. Suddenly we heard a loud laughter coming from the nearby house. Our long journey was full of surprises. They have lately been to Japan with a friendly visit. From the top of the mountain the valley looks incredible. He liked to look at autumn leaves when they were falling to the ground. The children have always wanted to visit the land of koalas and eucalyptus trees. An endless desert was stretching in front of our eyes. They destroyed the old market and built several houses in its place. Into what sea does this river flow?
